Género más grande de la familia de las Cactáceas (ver cacto).

Las plantas, originarias del Nuevo Mundo, se caracterizan por tener espinas o gloquidios. Los subgrupos se definen en función de la forma de los segmentos del tallo: las chollas tienen nudos cilíndricos, mientras que los nopales los tienen planos. Los tamaños abarcan desde formas minúsculas y resistentes al frío hasta variedades arboriformes. En el hemisferio boreal, estas especies se dan más al norte que cualquier otro cacto.
